Every church desires to fulfill the mission Christ has entrusted to it. Every pastor longs to see people come to faith, believers mature in their walk with Christ, leaders develop, and ministries work together in unity. Yet even the healthiest churches face challenges as they seek to balance biblical faithfulness with the practical realities of leading people and organizing ministry.
After many years of serving in both the marketplace and vocational ministry, I noticed recurring patterns. Churches were filled with committed pastors, faithful volunteers, and meaningful ministries. Yet too often, those ministries functioned independently rather than intentionally supporting the church's overall mission. Individual ministries accomplished worthwhile objectives, but they did not always work together as one unified body.
Those observations gradually became a conviction.
I became convinced that healthy churches rarely happen by accident. They are cultivated through faithful biblical leadership, intentional discipleship, healthy relationships, thoughtful organization, and a shared commitment to Christ's mission. Every ministry—whether worship, children, students, adults, missions, pastoral care, administration, or outreach—should intentionally strengthen the whole church's mission rather than simply pursuing its own objectives.
That conviction eventually became known as Ministry By Design.
Long before it became a series of books, Ministry By Design represented a philosophy of ministry. It provided a framework for thinking intentionally about the life of the local church, helping leaders evaluate ministries, develop people, strengthen organizational health, and align every area of ministry around the mission Christ has given His Church.
Over time, that philosophy naturally found expression through consulting, leadership development, teaching, and, eventually, Ministry By Design: The Series. The books were never intended to create a new philosophy; they simply put into writing the principles, observations, and practical lessons that had been developing through years of ministry experience.
Today, Ministry By Design continues to pursue the same purpose that inspired it from the beginning—to serve the local church by providing biblical principles, practical resources, and thoughtful guidance that help pastors and ministry leaders strengthen every area of ministry. While methods may vary from one congregation to another, the need for intentional leadership, healthy ministry, and unwavering commitment to Christ's mission remains constant.
