Strengthening Christ's Church Through Intentional Ministry

Position Descriptions By Design (Legacy)

Healthy ministry depends upon clarity. When pastors, staff members, and volunteers clearly understand their responsibilities, authority, expectations, and relationship to the church's overall mission, ministry becomes more unified, effective, and sustainable. Well-written position descriptions are therefore far more than administrative documents—they are practical tools for strengthening leadership, supporting ministry, and faithfully stewarding the people God has called to serve.

Position Descriptions By Design is one of the foundational Legacy Volumes in Ministry By Design: The Series, providing churches and ministry organizations with one of the most comprehensive collections of ministry position descriptions developed specifically for the local church.

Developed through many years of ministry leadership, organizational design, and practical experience, this volume helps pastors and church leaders understand not only how to write effective position descriptions, but why they matter. Readers are guided through principles for developing, maintaining, and using position descriptions that strengthen leadership, clarify expectations, improve communication, support volunteer recruitment, and prepare churches for healthy ministry transitions.

While the broader Position Descriptions By Design project has developed more than 1,100 ministry position descriptions, this Legacy Volume includes nearly 190 representative descriptions selected to provide practical guidance across a wide variety of church ministries. Each description may be adapted to reflect the unique mission, structure, and ministry philosophy of the individual church or organization.

The position descriptions represent numerous ministry areas, including leadership, governance, discipleship, worship, family ministries, communications, facilities, guest services, counseling, evangelism, missions, small groups, support ministries, and many other areas of church life. Together, they show how thoughtful organizational planning supports healthier ministry and more effective leadership.

Rather than viewing position descriptions as static administrative documents, Position Descriptions By Design presents them as living ministry tools that help churches recruit wisely, develop leaders intentionally, clarify responsibilities, encourage accountability, and prepare both staff members and volunteers for faithful service.

As a foundational resource in Ministry By Design: The Series, this Legacy Volume reflects the continuing conviction that healthy churches are strengthened when every ministry and every leader clearly understands how they contribute to the mission of the whole church—By Design.
